Managing Director of Pleon Netherlands wins prestigious Dutch marketing literature award

Dutch Platform of Innovation Marketing honour Egbert Jan van Bel’s book ‘Event Driven Marketing’

Pleon Netherlands today announced that its Managing Director, Egbert Jan van Bel, has won the Dutch Marketing Literature of the Year Award 2004 for his book ‘Event Driven Marketing (EDM).’ The prestigious annual Literature Award is organised by the Dutch Platform of Innovation in Marketing (PIM). The jury, which consisted of several independent professors and prominent executives, judged several books that has been published in the Dutch language in 2004. The jury chose ‘Event Driven Marketing’ as the winner because it was felt to be the first book to give such comprehensive treatment of the subject and to describe how EDM can be utilised to optimise customer value and drive sales. Currently available in Dutch, Pleon will publish the book under its own label in English, German and French early next year.*

The ethos behind the PIM Marketing Literature Award is to increase the profile of the high quality marketing material produced in the Netherlands, and to acknowledge the contribution such literature has on the further development of marketing as a discipline. To be nominated for the Marketing Literature Award, a book must offer fresh insights into marketing and provide practical guidance on how new marketing techniques may be used effectively.

In his book, Van Bel defines EDM as a discipline within marketing in which business and communications activities are based on observed and relevant changes in the individual needs of the customer. According to Van Bel, the philosophy behind EDM is getting to know the customer so well that it is possible to proactively respond to their needs and give them exactly what they need at the precise moment they need it. The book is based on Van Bel’s experience of customer relationship marketing (CRM) and one-to-one marketing with clients in the financial services, utilities and telecoms markets at Pleon Netherlands.

"Event Driven Marketing was a clear winner because it best satisfied our criteria: it is innovative, uses many practical examples and adds real value to the marketing profession as a whole,” said Hans Molenaar, President of the PIM Marketing Literature Award. “We also found that event driven marketing was clearly and comprehensively explained, the book had good progression, and was impressive both in terms of structure and design.”

The independent jury of the PIM Marketing Literature Award was chaired by Drs Hans Molenaar the President of PIM. The jury members were Prof.dr. Ruud Frambach from the Faculty of Marketing at the Free University at Amsterdam; Prof.dr.ir. Sicco Santema from the Marketing Faculty at the Technical University at Eindhoven; Drs. Arend-Jan Nijhuis, Principal CRM Consultant at Atos Origin; Drs. T. De Boer; and Kai Doornink, Editor of the IT publication ITCommercie.
