Shell Hydrogen Project Lands Pleon a Coveted PR Week Award Nomination

Europe’s leading consulting firm has once again been recognized for excellence.

This time Pleon has been short-listed for a 2006 PR Week Award in the Corporate Publications Category for a multi-national project for Shell Hydrogen. The publication suite, Experience Choice, directly addresses the sensitive and somewhat controversial issue of an emerging hydrogen economy, communicates Shell’s leadership position and educates readers about the facts in this emerging space.

Shell Hydrogen is at the forefront of this new sector and decided it needed to create commercial awareness and reinforce their messages, by creating a new fresh integrated communication campaign, which will be rolled out both within and outside of the Shell organisation. The project was short-listed for a PR Week Award based on its ability to fully address the complex nature of communicating to both internal audiences (Shell employees and management) as well as its use as an external educational tool promoting the near-term realities and benefits of a hydrogen economy.

Jennifer Helfer, Managing Director of Pleon’s UK office, and the project leader, says the objective of the project was to create tools that could simplify the complexities of the issues around hydrogen for a myriad of audiences including policy makers, media, partners and even other parts of Shell. "We needed to address head-on the perception that hydrogen energy is still a decade or two out and pave the way for Shell to market hydrogen as a real commercial business."

Pleon’s unique ability to assemble multi-national expertise where the client resides allowed for an effective collaboration between Pleon’s UK editorial services team and Pleon’s Dutch design team. The result was a consistent and compelling look at the business case for hydrogen, the evolution towards a hydrogen economy, and the role of Shell in the new energy future.

The new Shell Hydrogen publication campaign, developed by Pleon, included the creation of a main corporate brochure; five case studies with third party comment; a mini-brochure focusing on Shell’s 100 years of delivering choice to consumers and capturing the optimistic nature of a hydrogen economy; and a corporate video for Shell Hydrogen focusing on Real Lives, Real Business and Real Technology. The result is Shell’s vision for hydrogen is clearly captured and ready to help shape a new industry.

"Pleon was able to make a case for hydrogen in a credible, balanced and scientific manner," said Jana Petrova, Marketing and Communications Adviser, for Shell Hydrogen. "The printed materials formed a new, fresh and exciting look for the business and our Experience Choice slogan is now being used worldwide, providing an excellent example of the role of communications in the wider context of business and organisational strategy."

The PR Week Awards are among the highest accolades in the PR Industry. Winners will be announced on October 24 at an awards ceremony held at the Grosvenor House in London.
